Un’estate fa is a mystery-thriller with a unique narrative device, in which the story unfolds in an appealing way across two timelines, the present day and the summer of 1990.
Nowadays Elio is a successful lawyer living a great life, married to Isotta and father to 16-year-old Alice, but his past hides a painful secret. During a camping holiday in the summer of 1990, Arianna, the girl he was in love with, mysteriously disappeared in an accident. Elio was traumatized by that and doesn’t remember anything about that summer.
30 years later, Arianna’s body is finally found. She was killed and Elio is the prime suspect in the murder case: his amnesia is deemed a convenient excuse to Zancan, the Police detective investigating the cold case, who’s convinced of Elio’s involvement in the girl’s murder.
One night Elio is involved in a car accident and loses consciousness. The accident triggers Elio’s memory in a mysterious and immersive way: when he wakes up, he finds himself back in 1990 as a teenager during that summer he didn’t remember anything about. Is he dreaming? Or is it just a bizarre recollection of past events? Elio’s not sure. The only thing he knows is that he now has the chance to finally find out what happened to Arianna. But as quickly as he’ been dragged into the past, Elio suddenly finds himself back in the present day again, amazed and confused.
From then on, his conscience keeps traveling between the year 1990 and today.
After an initial moment of disbelief, Elio gets the opportunity to live again his younger years, during which time he tries to understand what happened to her and prove his innocence.
While in the present the police are on his heels and someone is threatening his life, in the past he finds out that nobody ever really told him the truth about that summer.
